Natural Gas Is Not Cleaner Than Coal
The industry likes to claim that natural gas burns cleaner than coal. The operative word here is “burns.” It is true that burning natural gas emits 50% less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than burning coal but this is only part of the story. Natural gas is 80% methane and studies prove that leaked methane is up to 100 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
The industry also claims that only 1% of natural gas is leaked due to extraction, transportation, processing and consumption activities. Private and university studies across multiple states proves this claim is false and that deadly methane leaks approach 17%. Learn More
